In 1981, the First Baptist Church in Washington sponsored Sunny’s family as refugees from Laos to America. Sunny was the first in her family to graduate college. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelors in Political Science from UCLA in 2002. She earned her Juris Doctorate from NCCU in 2009. She has been working as an Assistant Public Defender for over a decade and is supervising the Felony Drug Unit. She is currently a candidate running for District Court Judge. She and her husband, Ben, have been married for 10 years. During her spare time, she visits with her siblings, her three nieces, two nephews, and goddaughter. They continually inspire and remind her of the importance of giving back to our community. Sunny volunteers annually with the McCreesh Place, a supportive housing community that helps formerly homeless citizens gain stability. For fun she enjoys taking aerial classes at a local studio, biking along Little Sugar Creek Greenway and going to the Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club with her husband.
